KAPP and Thor Salmon Enter Innovation and Development Partnership

Iceland
Salmon

KAPP and Thor Salmon have agreed to work together on new technology for land-based aquaculture. KAPP brings its knowledge of aquaculture, automation, and software, while Thor Salmon contributes its hands-on experience and production environment.

The goal is to create a solution that brings together water-quality monitoring, data collection, control systems, and data analysis. This will help operators easily see and understand important details about their farming environment.

Thor Salmon already uses a SCADA system made by KAPP. This new partnership will build on that system by adding more ways to measure, collect, and analyze data.

The new technology will be developed and tested at Thor Salmon’s real facilities. This lets KAPP work closely with people who know land-based aquaculture best. Thor Salmon will offer the testing site, data, expertise, and help review the results.

“The partnership combines Thor Salmon’s experience in land-based aquaculture with KAPP’s expertise in automation, software development, and technical solutions for aquaculture. Our goal is to make better use of data and turn it into clear, practical insights for operators. At this stage, we are focused on developing the solution, gaining experience, and validating its performance under real-world conditions.”
- Ólafur Karl Sigurðarson, CEO of KAPP.

The project will move forward in steps, checking the results at each stage before starting the next. Right now, the team is measuring, collecting, and comparing data and preparing to analyze it and connect it to Thor Salmon’s current systems.

By working this way, the company can focus on real operational needs and ensure the technology is tested carefully. Making the system reliable, accurate, and easy to use is a top priority.

“Our experience with the SCADA system KAPP developed for us has already been very positive. Through this development partnership, we intend to build on that foundation, enhance the system, and integrate additional measurements and data. Our goal is to use the information more effectively to improve visibility and support safe, efficient operations.”
- Steinþór Pálsson, CEO of Thor Salmon.

This partnership is part of KAPP’s ongoing work to create new aquaculture solutions and help the industry use more digital tools. The aim is for this technology to help other land-based aquaculture companies in Iceland and beyond in the future.

More details about the solution will be shared next spring, once there is more experience and results from testing and development.
